Participants study and protect Altai Republic’s most endangered species: snow leopard, Altai argali mountain sheep, and steppe eagles, among others. In 2013, participants spotted a female snow leopard from just a few hundred yards distant, an incredibly rare sighting.

By engaging tourists in this work as citizen-scientists, we hope to raise local and international awareness of this important region, bring added income to the Altai community, raise funding for critical wildlife conservation, and gain deeper understanding of critically important species in Altai.

Wild Altai UPDATE:

Due to circumstances outside our control related to visa issues and required Russian border permits, we have reached the very disappointing decision to cancel plans for Wild Altai expeditions in 2015. As always, we have the best interests of our trip participants in mind and will continue to monitor the travel climate. Please contact us if you’d like more information. We are optimistic that we can resume these wonderful expeditions in 2016.

Wild Altai Expeditions are organized by The Altai Project, a 501c3 project of Earth Island Institute.

The Altai Project works to protect nature and strengthen communities in Altai Republic and relies heavily on donations to continue our work. Donate!
